Delegation is an essential management skill, so why do so many leaders struggle with it? Leaders often have a love-hate relationship with delegating. Even when they intuitively understand that it comes with the territory…that it’s essential to get work done…that it’s an important tool for developing the people they lead…they still struggle with doing it at all, let alone doing it well.

Sure, people you lead “have” to do what you ask. But isn’t it better if they “want” to? Motivation comes from a mix of intrinsic (internal) factors and extrinsic (external) factors. Both can be effective, but extrinsic motivation (rewards, money, acclaim) tends to be more short-term while intrinsic motivation (driven by a personal interest or desire) is more lasting over time.

Motivating others starts with motivating yourself. People are often motivated to act by extrinsic motivators—external rewards such as money, prizes, and acclaim. This is where many leaders and companies focus a lot of attention, and it can be effective in the short term. But intrinsic motivation—internal drivers such as a desire to gain knowledge or make a difference—is where the magic happens.
